Our History

The Lucan Concert Band is Lucan’s premier band, having served the musical needs of the community for almost thirty years. Founded in 1983 by Eithne Donnelly, who began by providing Recorder lessons for 4th class students of Lucan’s St. Mary’s Boys’ National School, the Band has maintained its very close connection with that school ever since, and uses the school’s facilities for its weekly practices. Initially for boys only, the Band expanded to include the girls of Lucan in 1987, and has continued to go from strength to strength ever since.

Eithne handed over the baton to the Band’s current Musical Director & principle conductor – Lorcan Daly – in 1999. Musical Director: Lorcan is an accomplished and multi-talented musician, having begun his musical career at the tender age of 8 as a boy chorister in the Palestrina Choir. While studying voice under the tutelage of Ita O’Donovan, he did a musical tour of Europe before studying piano with Louise Thomas. He has had his voice trained with Veronica Dunne and Ken Shellard in the College of Music, Dublin. At the age of 10 he began studying the French Horn under Victor Malerish in the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He was principal horn player in the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, and has won many prestigious awards including gold medal in the Feis Ceol, and the John O’Connor Chamber of Music Cup.
